Diocesan Shrine of Saints Cyril and Methodius

There is a Roman Catholic church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Terchova, which is the largest shrine dedicated to these saints in Slovakia. You will also find a wooden Bethlehem in the entrance of the church, which is a popular tourist attraction.

The dominant feature of the hilltop municipality of Terchová, located in the northwest of Slovakia, is undoubtedly the local parish church, which is dedicated to the first Slavic saints Cyril and Methodius. It is a building in the style of the so-called Traditional Modernism from 1942 to 1949, when it replaced the Baroque church of St. Martin, which was no longer sufficient in capacity. The famous wooden moving Bethlehem is also an essential part of the largest Slovak church ever dedicated to the brothers of Thessaloniki.

Information from history

history of the church

From the second half of the 1930s, the municipality felt an acute need for a larger and more spacious church. A young priest, Stefan Bitter, finally came up with a concrete idea. After raising funds and digging the foundations, the cornerstone of the new church building was laid in 1942.
