Staré Město
Several agricultural and artisan settlements were established in the area of today’s Staré Město as early as the 6th century. The best known are the Na Valách settlement and the Na Špitálkách settlement. In the vicinity of the churches of St. Michael and St. Vitus, the foundations of four Great Moravian churches with burial sites have been found and specialised craft workshops from the 9th to 10th centuries have been uncovered. The extent and richness of the archaeological findings (buildings, utilitarian objects, armaments, jewellery) leaves no one in doubt that this was one of the important centres of the Great Moravian Empire.
In the 9th century, the territory of the Staré Město was the main part of Velihrad, one of the two main centres of Great Moravia, which also included a settlement on the site of the historical centre of Uherské Hradiště and an ecclesiastical centre on the heights of Sady. In the Staré Město there was a power complex with a stone palace of the Moravian princes and a rotunda. Another church stood in Na Valách, in the centre of the largest ever Moravian necropolis, and another church with a small burial ground was built on the south-western edge of the town in the area known as “Špitálky”.
