Basilica of St. Nicholas
Since the beginning of Trnava, the parish church of St. Nicholas has been the main church of the town. The significance of this church is symbolically reflected by its dominant position on the highest point of the historic core of the town. During the construction of the Gothic triple nave, begun sometime after 1325, the older Romanesque predecessor, to which the earliest surviving written reference to Trnava is linked, was removed. The construction of the largest sacral building in Trnava and its surroundings was completed after nearly a hundred years of continuous work, sometime in the first third of the 15th century.
Even today we can still admire frescoes from this period in the church’s vestibule, Gothic portals or tracery windows, leaf bolts of the vaults hiding human faces, a small stone baptismal font or the bell of St. Stephen in one of the towers. The prestige of the parish church was later multiplied during the period of Turkish expansion into Hungary, when for a relatively long period (1543-1820) it also became the main cathedral church of the temporary Archbishops of Esztergom, who are commemorated by beautiful stone epitaphs. In 2008, the parish church of St. Nicholas was granted the honorary title of Basilica Minor and became a Marian pilgrimage site of the Trnava Archdiocese.
